Does root canal treatment hurt?

Does root canal treatment hurt?
I asked a question yesterday about one of my teeth which has a hole in it and someone said I may need root canal treatment. Will it hurt?

I might note that I'm in no pain or anything over the tooth, but I worry about it possibly forming a tooth abscess in the future and my brother had one of those and according to him, it's the worst pain he's ever felt. It was horrible to even imagine happening to me.

answer:
I had one as well. Although they pumped my mouth full of novocaine, I still felt it. It was several years ago, but as I recall, they stuck some kind of burning toothpick thing in the hole in my tooth to disinfect. That hurt like hell, and is probably one of the worst pains I'd ever felt. Keep in mind, however, that the nerve on my tooth was exposed, so he was just essentially burning the nerve. It might be different for you. The guy was like, "Hmm, that's odd, you shouldn't have felt anything." So what I think happened was the heat transfered to surrounding parts of my gums or teeth or something.

So anyway, I asked for some more novocaine, and a few hours later I couldn't feel a thing.

Overall, it wasn't bad, except for that goddamn burning thing. But, then again, probably not everyone has to have that done.

i had one it was awful. they numb your gums and start drilling into your tooth. then they poke a needle right into the nerve of your tooth(that hurt the worst for me)but then they numb it and after that it shouldnt be to bad but it will still hurt.
