I would some like some feedback on a question/theory regarding the niacin flush.?
I have read that nicotinic acid causes a flush because it opens capillaries near the skins surface and increases circulation. Also, I read that the itch that can often accompany the flush is due to the histamines that can be "flushed" out of cells along with other toxins. So here's my theory/question: Is it medically accurate to suggest that taking a niacin supplement and inducing a flush could be used to remedy skin irritations such as poison ivy, oak, sumac, and/or insect bites? Could the short term flush/itch from the supplement relieve more long term skin discomforts created by contact dermatitis, allergic reactions, stings/bites, hives, rashes, etc.? What about chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or dandruff? Basically, I'm curious to know if niacin can clear toxins near the skins surface, could it relieve discomfort ON the surface? Any medical feedback on this
It doesn't flush toxins of any sort, the histamine response triggers an arachadonic acid response which triggers a prostaglandin response.....(PGD2 to be exact)

And it wont do a thing for skin conditions (except those which are caused by pellagra - which is a serious medical deficiency of niacin) - because while blood vessels under the skin might seem close to you, in terms of anatomy they might as well be football fields apart...

Excellent question. I use niacin every day and I'm very familiar with the "flush". I've experienced that if you use a very small dose, the flush is very small and bearable. Then, every few weeks, you can increase the dose and you will do OK.

Regarding short term use, I don't think it would be the answer. The flush all by itself is really hard to endure. It burns a LOT. If you have a skin condition, it would be a lot more painful that you would want to endure. But, you could try it out with a low dose. Also, the flush only lasts about 15 minutes.

For longer term conditions, it would be worth a try. No guarantee but it does cause more blood flow in the skin which could help some conditions. Increased blood flow should help clear out any toxins. Just be sure to work up to a full dose over a month or so.

About insect bites, I have some really good news. Read the article that I found at the following link. It really works on bug bites. http://www.unconventionalhealth.com/Itch…
