does anyone know of an excellent, non-gimmicky natural supplement to lower cholesterol?
I go on websites, and all guarantee with "catches" that their product works. I believe FDA approval has nothing to do with whether a product will work, since they don't generally approve hatural substances for lowering cholesterol. Finally, I don't know whether the testimonials aon sites are real testimonials.I do not eat red meat nor high in fat dairy products- lots of green leafy vegetables, fat free cheeses and yogurt. My downfalls are snacking in lots of peanuts, esating pizza weekly and a piece of cake every other day. I am 5'5" and weigh 115 lbs- do aerobic exercise 40 minutes 3 times per week- weights 15 minutes 4 times per week- lots of walking and stretching, yet, cholesetrol is 243 total- ratios, however, are still good. Not ready for statins. My MD believes in natural- beta sisterol and niacin, fish oil, rice yeast haven't worked.

Believe it or not, fiber therapy helps to control cholesterol because it really physically blocks the absorption of some of the fat you eat. A neat side-effect for those of us who have to be on fiber therapy. By fiber therapy, I mean Benefiber or Citrucel, which tend to work better and produce less gas than the psyllium husk products like Metamucil.
brain is mostly cholesterol. Cholesterol is needed to make Vit D. Why do you think it should be lowered???? Policosanol is supposed to work, but why do you want to?
I cant advise you to any known substance, because I do not have a license ,to do so. High Cholesterol is sometimes something that comes along, within the genetic make-up. The only thing you can consider, are healthy nutrition, cutting out the bad Fats, and eating your greens. Also try to minimize your Stress. Talk to your primary Health provider, what the best course of action would be , in your very own personal case. And yes, cut down on the Peanuts. Maybe you would want to substitute them with Almonds, as they carry a lower Fat content ,than the former. Also cut your Pizza consumption, to maybe one time, a month. All little steps, that you take, will reward you later with greater Results.
At least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
Use low-fat cheese on the pizza
Use good oils in cooking: olive, canola. Not peanut, "vegetable," soybean oils.
Make those cakes yourself, and use less butter, more good oils.
The peanuts contribute to HDL levels, not so much LDL, unless you eat nuts roasted in bad oils. Dry roasted nuts are best.
If these changes don't help, you need to accept that your personal biochemistry is prone to high cholesterol. Some people are, genetically. They can do everything right and still have high cholesterol.
